MidsouthMakers 2021 Reopening Preparations

After a long 15 months of not being able to hold our public open house meetings, MidsouthMakers has begun preparation to reopen to public open house events starting June 4th, 2021. Here are some pictures from May as members spent each Friday night helping to clean and purge the space to get ready to welcome new members and visitors.

Hosting Events at Midsouth Makers

We love to share our space and host events for our members. Part of being a member is the ability to host a small (10-15 attendees) event at the space. Midsouth Makers has hosted MemphisPHP.org Meetups, Board meetings for Memphis Technology Foundation and HACKmemphis, as well as many smaller events such a LAN parties and other gatherings for organizations.
How Do you host an event at Midsouth Makers?
Step 1: One of our members must be deeply involved with your organization and take responsibility for being at the space while the event is happening.
Step 2: The Midsouth Makers member that is your representative must contact the board board@midsouthmakers.org to schedule the event to ensure it does not interfere with any other events at the space.
Step 3: Promote your event! We’ll help Promote your event across all of our public channels.
Remember: Midsouth Makers is a functioning shop and work area constantly in use by our members. While members have first priority to using the space we do try to facilitate meetings and gatherings where our members are deeply involved as much as we can.

First Attempts at Aluminum Casting

Scott brought a plaster mold to the open house meeting tonight. He used 3D printed PLA parts and used the forge to burn out the PLA plastic and to melt some aluminum cans and some aluminum heat sinks. We ended up cooking the mold a bit too much, it was rather fragile. We could probably burn it out in under 30 minutes for the next attempt. While not perfect, we learned a lot!
LAN Party April 12th!

On Saturday April 12th we’ll be having another LAN party!
Game List: Team Fortress 2, Left For Dead 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, UT3, Monday Night Combat, Super Monday Night Combat, Diablo 3, StarCraft 2, DOTA2, Minecraft and anything else you’d like to play.
Food: We will have a taco/nacho bar setup with a variety of fillings, condiments and options available for a $15 donation (MidsouthMakers Members $10) which includes soda. BYOB (obviously 21+) Feel free to bring your own food/drinks/snacks.
Agenda: 4p – 6pm Setup. Food served at 5pm. From 6pm onwards, game, eat and frag!
All attendees need to be 18 years old or older, unless accompanied by a legal guardian at all times. Bring your PC, a monitor, power strip, and an ethernet cord.
If you plan to drink you must be 21+ and please drink responsibly, if you need a ride/cab home please let someone know.
Cookout Friday 2/28
